2023 Toyota Sienna changes

The brawny-for-a-minivan exterior of the 2023 Toyota Sienna is an attempt to cosplay as an SUV, but simply a passing glance in its way betrays it for what it is—a minivan. Okay by us. With a quiet cabin and a smooth ride, this minivan drives well in our opinion. The interior of the Sienna is roomy and well furnished in addition to the obvious practical advantages that come with any minivan, even though its second-row seats aren't detachable or stowable as they are in other vans.

The Sienna's fourth generation is only available as a hybrid, and both the front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions have a 245 horsepower rating that we found to be on the poky side during our testing. Although the Sienna gets 36 combined mpg, which is far better than the other minivans on the market, we'd much prefer driving the Chrysler Pacifica, Honda Odyssey, or Kia Carnival.

In its third year of this generation's only hybrids,  2023 Toyota Sienna changes is. In the meantime, Toyota is commemorating the nameplate's 25th anniversary this year with a limited-edition model. 

Only 2,525 25th Anniversary Edition Siennas will be produced, and all of them will be based on the sporty XSE trim and come in either Celestial Silver or Wind Chill Pearl exterior color. 

Visual cues that identify the special model include distinctive 20-inch wheels, roof rails, external badging in black, and outside mirrors with built-in puddle lights. With heated and ventilated front seats, a JBL radio system, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and carpeted floor mats with the 25th Anniversary emblem, the inside is finished in black leather with silver stitching.

The sportier XSE variant, which has 20-inch wheels, more aggressive front and rear bumpers, and sport front seats, is what we're looking at. Additionally, second-row captain's seats and in-dash navigation are standard on the XSE. Although front-wheel drive is standard on the XSE, as it is on other Sienna models, adding all-wheel drive only costs $760. This seems like a reasonable improvement in our opinion.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Sienna, unlike other iterations of Toyota's family van, is only available as a hybrid. A 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine and two electric motors working together to produce 245 horsepower make up the powertrain. There is an all-wheel drive option that adds a third electric motor in the back to power the back wheels.

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the Sienna's major competition, is only available with front-wheel drive and has a V-6 engine and electric motors that provide 260 horsepower.

These results are comparable to what the Pacifica Hybrid managed, but they are much slower than non-hybrid case studies of the Pacifica we've checked as well as the Honda Odyssey. Our all-wheel drive Sienna Platinum struggled to impress us during acceleration testing, needing 7.7 seconds to reach 60 mph and finishing the quarter-mile in 15.8 seconds at only 88 mph.

Fuel efficiency and actual MPG

According to the EPA, front-wheel drive Sienna models should achieve 36 mpg combined city/highway, with all-wheel drive models scoring 1 mpg less at 35 mpg. With our all-wheel drive Platinum test car, we achieved 29 mpg in our mix of city and highway driving. We'll update this article with the findings once we get the opportunity to put the new Sienna through our 75-mile highway fuel efficiency test. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Sienna's interior is contemporary and fashionable, complementing its bold outward overhaul. Instead of the open cockpit layout of the previous generation model, Toyota has developed a tall centre console with a sizable storage compartment beneath that extends from the dashboard to the centre armrest. The sporty XSE variant comes with black-and-white faux-leather seats with red contrast stitching, while the upscale Limited and Platinum editions feature dashboards covered in stitched leather-like material and interior trim in two-tones.

However, the optional second-row captain's chairs can slide forward and back a total of 25 inches to help provide maximum legroom for rear-seat passengers or to open as much space as possible aft of the second row for cargo. Unlike the Odyssey and the Pacifica Hybrid, the Sienna's second row seats are not removable. The second row of seats in the Limited and Platinum variants can recline and include pop-up ottomans. Onboard vacuums are also an option for the two top trims.

Connectivity and Information

The newest infotainment system from Toyota features a 9.0-inch touchscreen display that is upright and located above the climate controls on the dashboard. 

Seven USB outlets are distributed throughout the van's interior, and connection options for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are all standard. Additionally, Toyota offers an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot and SiriusXM satellite radio.

 The stereo's standard configuration has six speakers, and XLE variants have eight. The Limited and Platinum come standard with a 12-speaker JBL sound system, while the XLE and XSE have it as an option. 

Starting with the XSE grade, in-dash navigation is standard. All models save the basic LE model may be ordered with an optional rear-seat entertainment system with an 11.6-inch LCD.

Features for Driver Assistance and Safety

The 2017 Toyota Sienna comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0 suite of driver-assistance technology, while convenience features like parking sensors and a 360-degree exterior camera system are available as options. In comparison to the Sienna, the Kia Carnival has a longer powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranty. Toyota compensates for its modest warranty package, meanwhile, with a two-year, cost-free maintenance programme.

  • 5 years or 60,000 miles are covered by the powertrain warranty.

  • 8 years or 100,000 miles are covered under the hybrid component warranty.
